Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ Received 2026 Chicago Landmark Award for Preservation Excellence

Berglund Construction is proud to share that the restoration of Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ received a 2026 Chicago Landmark Award for Preservation Excellence. 

Presented by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, the Preservation Excellence Awards honored outstanding projects that made notable improvements to individual Chicago Landmarks or buildings within Chicago Landmark Districts. The recognition celebrated projects that preserved Chicago’s architectural history while supporting the continued use and vitality of the city’s built environment. 

Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ was recognized with an Award for Restoration, highlighting the care, craftsmanship and collaboration involved in preserving this important historic structure. In addition to Berglund, the project team includes Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ, The Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley Institute, Arda Design (architect), and the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund.   

6106 N. Kenmore received its award for for its comprehensive restoration of a landmarked private residence. The work preserved original masonry, windows and interior detailing while integrating modern MEP systems, a cedar shake roof, solar panels and geothermal wells, all completed with care to bring this historic home back to life.

“This recognition is incredibly meaningful because Roberts Temple Church of God represents an important part of Chicago’s history,” said Sarah Pantos, Preservation Manager at Berglund Construction. “Our team approached this restoration with great care and respect for the building’s significance, and we are honored to have played a role in preserving it for future generations.” 

Award winners were honored at the third annual Preservation Expo at the Chicago Cultural Center in the Claudia Cassidy Theater. 

This recognition reflected the meaningful work done to protect and restore Chicago’s landmark buildings, and Berglund Construction was honored to be part of a project that contributed to the city’s preservation legacy.
