Berglund Construction Announced 2024 Merit Award Finalist for Three Outstanding Projects

Within Berglund Construction’s portfolio of notable projects completed since 2021, three exceptional projects, within three separate categories, have been selected as Merit Award finalists presented by the Chicago Business Congress. The Merit Awards have celebrated the building industry since 1956 by singling out the outstanding projects in greater Chicagoland built during the past three years.

As a finalist, we constructed individualized presentations to showcase the community impact, project challenges and achievements, innovative and functional designs as well as our dedicated efforts to include a diverse workforce for each project. We presented alongside our valued partners, as showcased below, to exemplify our successes and outstanding partner collaboration for seamless project completions.

Blue Paradox – Museum of Science of Industry Chicago

Presented with Wight and Company and the Museum of Science and Industry Chicago

The Blue Paradox is a powerful, immersive experience taking you below the ocean’s surface to explore the impact plastic pollution has had on our planet’s largest ecosystem. Berglund focused its efforts on the renovation of the substantial 75,000 square-foot East Pavilion. The project's scope entailed the comprehensive overhaul of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection (MEPFP) infrastructure, the installation of rooftop units (RTUs), exhibit supports, and the application of fresh finishes.

Higher Education

The University of Chicago Bartlett Hall Dining Commons

Presented with INSPEC and the University of Chicago

This former gymnasium and prized athletic facility opened in 1904, designed by Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge (architectural firm). This historical landmark, and the largest dining hall on the University of Chicago’s campus, is now referenced as the Bartlett Hall Dining Commons. Berglund restored all four of the exterior walls, rebuilding all turrets and parapets, and tuckpointed the entire building. In addition, the project scope included replacing damaged ashlars with new stone, matching the existing stone, and removing the existing roof and 200 ft long skylight with a clay tile roof.

Renovation & Adaptive Reuse Over $20 Million

Acadia Healthcare – Montrose Adult Behavioral Health Hospital

Presented with Stengel Hill Architecture and Acadia Healthcare

Built in the 1960s, this medical building was transformed into a cutting-edge Behavioral Health Unit in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood. This five-story, 101 bed facility underwent a meticulous renovation, modernizing its MEPFP infrastructure and technology while respecting the residential area. Berglund focused on its new infrastructure, exterior windows, and exterior sealers while meeting and exceeding the stringent behavioral health standards.
