Berglund Construction Breaks Ground on Calumet Hall at Purdue Northwest

Purdue University Northwest (PNW) has officially broken ground on Calumet Hall, its third on-campus residence hall, with Berglund Construction proudly serving as Construction Manager for the transformational project. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 17, kicking off a major step in the university’s shift toward a more residential, student-centered campus environment.

“Today marks an exciting step forward in our efforts to create a vibrant, engaging, and student-centered campus,” said PNW Chancellor Kenneth C. Holford. “This new residence hall is more than just a building—it’s a home, a hub for connection, and a symbol of our commitment to student success and community.”

The 42,000-square-foot facility, located at the northeast corner of 173rd Street and Woodmar Avenue in Hammond, is slated to open in time for the Fall 2026 semester. Designed to meet the growing demand for on-campus housing, Calumet Hall will offer 150 beds, along with amenities such as a communal kitchen, laundry facilities, student study spaces, and a lounge.

Berglund Construction is leading the charge on this development, working closely with university leadership to ensure the project stays on track and reflects the needs of students today and in the future.

“We’re honored to be partnering with Purdue Northwest on this important expansion of student life,” said Jeffrey Berglund, President of Berglund’s Building Division. “As Construction Manager, our role is to ensure this residence hall is delivered with the highest quality standards, on time and on budget—while maintaining a vision that truly supports student growth, connection, and campus community.”

Calumet Hall will bring students closer than ever to the academic and social core of campus, just minutes away from classrooms and services like the Student Union Library. It also aims to support the university’s growing student population, including PNW Pride student-athletes and others seeking a more immersive college experience.
