The Historic Masonry Restoration Project at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Duluth, Minnesota, involved a comprehensive exterior conservation effort focused on stabilizing and preserving the landmark’s historic stone façade. Honored with the 2021 Duluth Preservation Award, the project's extensive scope included full repointing of deteriorated mortar joints across the tower and wall elevations, selective stone replacements, and precision dutchman repairs. To ensure long-term weather protection, limestone elements at the parapets and caps were removed, flashed, and reset, while low-pressure grout injection was utilized to consolidate internal wall cavities. The preservation team also completed gentle masonry cleaning, coating removal, and the detailed repair of architectural features like louvers and pilaster caps. Executed in strict accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards, the entire project utilized careful sequencing and safety measures to allow the church to remain fully operational for its congregation during construction.
