Berglund provided restoration services for the historic Rock Island Boathouse, constructed in 1929 by Icelandic immigrant and inventor Chester Thordarson. Nearly all materials used in the original construction were sourced directly from the island, making the preservation of its historic fabric a central focus of the project.
The restoration included in-place repairs to existing wood windows and doors, custom fabrication and replacement of deteriorated units, painting of all wood surfaces, concrete restoration and stone repointing and replacement. New stone was harvested from the island to maintain compatibility with the original construction and preserve the boathouse’s authentic character.
The work was carefully phased to allow the boathouse to remain open throughout construction, minimizing disruption while safeguarding this important historic landmark for future generations.
