La Rabida Children's Hospital
Emergency Room Renovation
The ER renovation infused a child-friendly nautical theme throughout the hospital. The building remained occupied during the project, including the exterior entrance renovation.
Project Overview

Berglund provided construction services to renovate the existing La Rabida Children’s Hospital Emergency Department without interruption to hospital operations. In addition, a new ADA-compliant front entrance was rehabilitated.

The nautical theme was accentuated throughout the interior finishes. The existing building remained occupied through the project including the exterior entrance renovation. The renovation extended the nautical theme into the concept of a “safe harbor.” Undulating patterns in floor tile and ceiling details reflect both water and sky. Blues and greens dominate the palette, suggesting a marine environment, and punches of yellow symbolize the sun — a La Rabida icon.

The lobby was designed for both children and adults. The children’s area is outfitted with books and games, while the adult area incorporates a soothing water wall that provides a sense of calm and serenity during a stressful time in family's life.

The emergency treatment area focuses on allowing space around the bedside for parents and caregivers. The translucent “bubble glass” provides privacy while continuing the playful atmosphere.
