Project Overview

The project involved the addition of a single-story extension to the pre-existing four-story Crowe Hall building. This new fifth floor, covering approximately 9,500 square feet, was designated to provide 35 offices for faculty and departmental use, along with a small pantry and restroom facilities designed to match the layout of the floors below. These additional office spaces were intended to accommodate faculty and staff members of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University.

Notably, the original construction of the existing building had anticipated this fifth-floor expansion, and provisions for this addition were incorporated into the structural, mechanical, and electrical systems from the outset. Berglund successfully executed the vertical extension of the fifth floor within the specified timeline and budget constraints. Remarkably, this vertical expansion was carried out while the building remained in use, requiring Berglund to work both in and around the building’s occupants, including faculty and students, in a safe and conscientious manner to ensure the project’s successful completion.
