Whiting, Indiana (April 6, 2015) – Opened in 1923, The Whiting Community Center, a gift from John D. Rockefeller to the city of Whiting in honor of its World War I veterans, was recently given a complete facelift by Berglund Construction.
This beautiful, but massive stone structure charmed local residents with its traditional coffered ceiling entrance, inviting fireplace and social rooms. Nevertheless, the almost century old space was in dire need of upgrading. The swimming pool, men’s gym, and bowling alley had been drain on the City’s budget and had to be repaired.
Berglund was selected to oversee the renovation of this City gem and the work was completed meticulously and safely. Senior Project Manager, Dennis Murzyn, oversaw the project on behalf of Berglund and took the first steps of suggesting the center be closed during renovations to minimize any potential hazards to patrons.
The project work scope included restoration of the main lobby, total upgrade of the lower floor with the installation of a state-of-the-art fitness area, a new aerobics room and a day care center.
The City has leased the space to the YMCA and anticipates saving more than $500,000 annually due to the new lease arrangement.
