n., The ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
INTAC, the International brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 697 and
winner of the 2012 CFA Project of the year tapped Berglund to build their new 40,000 sq. ft. headquarters.
The sustainable building functions as a living laboratory with 6 classrooms and a computer lab where apprentices learn drafting and other electrical skills.
A unique strategy implemented early on was to install the Solar Panel System and have it provide permanent power during the construction phase. The JATC apprentices participated in the installation, extending the mission of a “living laboratory” to not only the classroom but in the field. These solar panels will continue to harness the power of the sun, and supplement the central electrical grid.
SYMPATHY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND ITS SURROUNDINGS:
A major element of achieving LEED Gold certification was the diversion of the construction materials from landfills. Berglund worked with the waste management company to divert over 84% of all construction waste/materials from landfills.
Another method of reaching LEED Gold Certification was utilizing recycled materials in the construction of the building. Some elements were the harvested wood used in the lobby spaces. This wood came from the actual site of the facility and milled by a local lumber company.
During Preconstruction Berglund at the direction of the Owner will analyze with the Architect various sustainable elements of the design that might contribute to LEED Certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Much of our LEED Analysis will be attributed to the methods and means of construction that Berglund implements on behalf of the Owner. A compilation of these items will be available for review to determine any desire to move toward a level of LEED Certification.
