Project Overview

The Campagna Academy Residential Treatment Center provides a controlled environment for youth residents challenged by societal issues related to drug and alcohol abuse and mental illness. The building program required a delicate balance between the security and maintenance aspects of this lock-down facility. It was also important that the new facility preserve a “home-like” atmosphere for its young residents.

Areas of treatment include psychological care and rehabilitation for domestic and dysfunctional family environments. The living quarters allow for single-room accommodations with a central plan for supervised group social activity and food services. The new 46,000-sqft, two-story facility can house up to 48 residents.

Project Approach

Berglund Construction, James Childs Architects and Campagna Academy staff participated in several collaborative working sessions to design the layout. This yielded a building design that would ensure all 48 beds remained supervised. Four classrooms and a computer lab were also included to assure continued educational services within the secure environment.

The Residential Treatment Center has extensive security systems and applications, keeping the facility completely secure in the event of volatile disturbance. The development of this facility brings the Campagna Academy to comprehensive standards for youth treatment in Northwest Indiana. It also allowed for the immediate integration of planned services with students and young adults from local school corporations assigned to Campagna by the Department of Children and Family Services or the local judicial system.
