Spotlight on Berglund’s Work: Construction

Jewel-Osco

Rain, snow, sleet … in any weather, you can count on Berglund to be there. We slogged through the slush to deliver this Chesterton, Ind., Jewel-Osco store on time, even when winter storms threatened to derail our schedule.

Berglund broke ground on the new store in fall of 2000, and lost four weeks of construction time in December 2000 and January 2001 because of severe weather conditions. Our workers rallied, though, completing the project in six months as originally planned. They did it all without losing any time to accidents, despite the weather. Berglund’s efficient planning, including ordering building materials during the construction phase, helped keep the project on track.

The completed 62,000-square-foot store replaced an existing store of half the size that was located across the street. Berglund constructed the store’s exterior as well as its interior, installing new floors and lighting and replacing the stocked shelves. Our work caught the eye of the Construction Advancement Foundation, which named it the 2001 Project of the Year.

In Their Own Words: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 697

“I can’t say enough good things about your entire team! What a pleasure. … The efforts of your craftsmen and supervisors provided value to our project and reflect favorably on your entire operation. The end result is a premier facility that is truly unique to the Calumet region.”

–Raymond Kasmark, president, IBEW Local 697. Berglund completed a joint training and administration center for the union and the National Electrical Contractors Association last year.

Spotlight on Berglund’s Work: Construction

Montgomery Village Hall and Police Station

When the village of Montgomery wanted to jump-start redevelopment in town, it began with its own digs. Berglund constructed a new village hall that would anchor Montgomery’s downtown area, providing community space and setting an aesthetic tone for new construction.

The 22,000-square-foot village hall features a three-tiered lobby with upscale terrazzo flooring, a clay tile roof and a waterfall feature outside the front doors — all surrounded by native landscaping. The building’s shape and the building materials Berglund used complement a 150-year-old mill located nearby on the Fox River. Ample parking behind the hall and an array of public meeting rooms, including a village boardroom, community room and multipurpose room, help make the space inviting to local residents.

Along with the new hall, Berglund constructed a 34,000-square-foot police facility for Montgomery that provided many new amenities for the police department. The station sits on 46 acres and includes a shooting range, training facility, forensic evidence area and administrative offices.

Berglund Wins Big at Northwest Indiana Construction Awards Banquet

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Clear some space in the awards case: Berglund brought home big kudos at this year’s Northwest Indiana Construction Awards.

The awards program, which was co-hosted by the Construction Advancement Foundation and the Northwest Indiana Business Roundtable, honored the best and brightest in Northwest Indiana’s construction industry. Berglund was named “Commercial Contractor of the Year” at the awards ceremony, held earlier this month in Hobart, Ind.

Berglund also won “Commercial Project of the Year” for the training and apprentice center we built in Merrillville, Ind., for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and National Electrical Contractors Association. The building features scores of eco-friendly elements, including solar panels installed at the beginning of construction that powered the construction process. The center is now on track to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to Berglund’s success!
