Celebrating 100 Years: Going Solar

What does it take to reach 100? As part of our 100th anniversary celebration, we’re posting a piece of Berglund’s history on our blog each day for 100 days. Check in each day to learn new tidbits about our company, win prizes based on your Berglund knowledge, and, most of all, to help us celebrate.

Spotlight on Berglund’s Work: Construction

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and National Electrical Contractors Association Training and Apprentice Center

Talk about green: Even the construction of this Berglund project, a joint training and apprentice center for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and National Electrical Contractors Association, was decidedly eco-friendly. One of the first items on the construction agenda was the installation of photovoltaic solar panels, which provided power throughout the construction process.

Along with those solar panels, the $11 million, 40,000-square-foot center in Merrillville, Ind., boasts a slew of other environmentally friendly features. Berglund built the center using locally sourced materials and responsibly harvested lumber, and the building also includes LED lighting, plug-ins for hybrid and electric vehicles, and showers for anyone who arrives by bike. In addition, Berglund and the building’s owners worked with Save the Dunes, an organization dedicated to conservation in Northwest Indiana, to preserve the area around the building. Berglund began work in September 2009 and finished the project late last year.

All that green is likely to turn into gold for the center. The project originally aimed to be certified as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver, but is now seeking LEED Gold certification.
